I originally studied as a classical soprano from a young age with Mary Nicholson, having also played various orchestral instruments, and sat Grade 8 Voice aged seventeen. I went on to sing in various genres, and studied with Helena Shenel and Sybil Esmore in London. For the past 18 years I have sung in rock, funk, soul and pop bands, both original and covered music. I have a Foundation Degree in Professional Musicianship from the University of Sussex, specialising in Vocals. I now divide my time between teaching singing at The Cavendish School in Eastbourne, private students at home, and performing with my function band and own band, for which I write the music; we are currently involved in recording an album to licence with a large UK festival company. I also sing choral music for fun.
I teach all genres of vocals (having sung most myself, including heavy rock!) but I use the basis of classical form to work the voice in practice - my own experience has shown me that this is the most effective way to expand the range, improve tone, tuning, enunciation, power and placement, and keep the voice healthy even if you use, for example, rock vocal techniques, such as grit. In addition to this I teach techniques to improve the 'mixed voice' which the majority of singers wish to develop for performing modern music. My lessons can also include music theory, microphone, recording and performance technique, if required.
If you wish to sing just for fun, to work towards performance, or to study for examinations, I can help you with your goals. Feel free to contact me, or pop in, for a chat to discuss your needs further.
I am CRB checked and have Public Liability Insurance with the Musician's Union.

I have been teaching for twelve years, since the age of 14, and pride myself on being a forward thinking, dynamic teacher who puts enjoyment through learning at the centre of all the tuition I provide. I offer lessons tailor-made to suit every individual student, giving them space to try out a wide variety of styles to find what they enjoy the most, while giving them the technical and musical tools to build their playing ability quickly and enjoyably. I place emphasis on improvisation and creativity over simple repetition of scored material, but I do ensure that, should the student wish, they can enjoy the more traditional 'reading and exams' teaching method. All students learn to read music, and are taught theory and a little history, but it's always fun! My experience has shown me that the most effective music tuition combines creativity, discipline and enjoyment, and that is what I aim to deliver.
I have been a musician my whole life, studying cello from age 7, piano from age 11 and vocals from age 13, plus guitar and saxophone. I have ABRSM Grade 8 in my disciplines and have recently been awarded a 1st Class BA (Hons) in Professional Musicianship from the University of Sussex.
I currently teach in Eastbourne on Tuesdays and also teach from my studio in Hove on other days, but feel free to get in touch to see if we can find a day to suit you.
CRB checked and insured.
Vocals (14+):
I offer vocal lessons in all styles, including rock technique and screaming. I combine contemporary singing technique with my classical training to help you find and perfect your vocal performance. Whether singing for fun or professionally, I have extensive experience as a vocal coach, performer and session singer that will help you achieve your goals in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. I regularly perform live with cover bands and original groups, and can help you with issues including mic technique, stamina, range, control and pitching, tone and confidence, plus trouble shooting for specific problems such as pain when singing, voice loss, grit control or breathiness. Whether you are a complete beginner or a seasoned professional, I offer a tailor-made service that helps you develop your own individual, unique voice. |

If you feel that your voice has more potential than it is currently achieving, or you have vocal problems that seem unsurmountable, why not have a free consultation with Stephen at either of his studios, in Lincoln or Eastbourne? You have nothing to lose and it may just unlock the key to freeing your voice!
Stephen has a very technical approach to teaching and places great emphasis on the correct placing of the voice. This, combined with strong breath support (the 'engine of the sound') and control of upper body tension, is essential to achieve evenness of timbre and projection throughout the ranges of pitch and dynamic, and across all vowels. While his voice has always been an instrument of great quality, ease of production at the top of the voice and through the passagio never came easily. Conseqently the difficulties he had and the extensive study required to overcome them has given him a deep understanding of the vocal mechanism in these areas. |
